SkySafari adapts itineraries due to Lobo Airstrip closure
The prolonged closure of Lobo airstrip by Serengeti National Park management has prompted SkySafari to make logistical adjustments to its itineraries. Currently, all guests bound for Serengeti Migration Camp will now arrive at Seronera airstrip instead.
To accommodate this change, SkySafari has collaborated with Elewana Collection to refine the guest experience.
East Africa SkySafari:
- Departures from Mara moved from mid-day to late morning
- Arrival at Seronera before mid-afternoon
- Private guide welcome with refreshments
- Game viewing direct transfer to Migration Camp (approx. 3 hours) with arrival at camp at sunset
- Departure day includes morning game drive and picnic lunch en route to Seronera
8-day and 10-day Tanzania SkySafari:
- Full-day game drive from Seronera to Migration Camp
- Picnic lunch in a private location
- Arrival at Migration Camp for sundowners
- Departure day includes direct transfer to Seronera after breakfast
While the closure of the airstrip is beyond our control, we hope these changes aim to minimise inconvenience. We kindly ask our travel partners to make guests aware that Seronera airstrip is busier than Lobo, especially during peak dry season, which may result in more vehicle traffic and dustier conditions. SkySafari guides will prioritise less congested routes where possible to enhance the safari experience. For more details, please contact our Guest Relations team.
Birding and Beyond
SkySafari offers birding enthusiasts the opportunity to view some of Africa’s rarest species
Whilst many visitors book a safari to witness the Big Five, others seek to explore a vibrant and colourful world of birdlife. People travel from far and wide to see Africa’s rich and diverse species of birds and SkySafari’s Kenya itinerary is no exception in offering a gateway into this fascinating natural world. We asked Elewana’s specialist birding guide Godfrey to tell us about some of the most sought-after bird sightings on the Kenya circuits.
Amboseli National Park
With well over 400 species of birdlife in Amboseli National Park, there is no shortage of opportunities to witness feathered friends, however many people look out for the two species of Flamingo that call the area home. The Greater and Lesser Flamingos can be seen here in great numbers, especially in the wet season.
Meru National Park
Well-known for its lion populations and the Born Free fame, Meru is also home to hundreds of species of birdlife. Some of the rarer species that twitchers would have high on their list is the Pelś Fishing Owl, the Hindes Babbler and the African Finfoot.
Loisaba Conservancy
While Loisaba is home to majestic lions, elusive leopards, magnificent elephants and endangered reticulated giraffes and Grevy’s zebra, it also hosts a spectacular array of a much more diverse class of vertebrates. From the Verreaux’s eagle with a wingspan of 2.3 metres to the Firefinch that only weighs 10 grams, guests staying at Loisaba have the opportunity to discover over 250 species of birds. Some of the rarer species guests may want to look out for are the Vulturine Guineafowl, Stone Partridge and Boran Cisticola.
Masai Mara
The Masai Mara is heralded as a birding paradise with over 450 bird species out of which more than 45 species are birds of prey. Amongst the many highlights, two of the rarer birds that might make it to the top of a must-see list include the Rufous-Tailed Weaver and the Karamoja Apalis.
Sustainable Sky
Clearer information on the impact of offsetting carbon emission
© carbontanzania.com
SkySafari’s partner Carbon Tanzania has refreshed its website to make it easier to understand the impact of contributions. The website still has a project page that focuses on the Yaeda-Eyasi Landscape project, but they have broken the information down further so it is now easier to see what Sustainable Development Goals (SDG”s) the project contributes toward and its impacts.
Visitors to the site will now understand the threats to the landscape and read statements from community members in addition to an assurance block that talks about verification, additionality and permanence.
The about us page introduces the field team members and there is now a whole page dedicated to why and how Carbon Tanzania work with local communities.

The Week: SkySafari Kenya – let your wildest dreams take flight
Make the most of your time in the wild with a fly-in tour of Kenya’s star safari destinations

Few places have names more evocative than the Masai Mara. Long before I had been to Africa, those two words could summon up a dreamlike world of golden plains, acacia trees and big cats lying watchful in the shade. Long-held expectations often lead to disappointment, but when I joined a SkySafari tour of southwest Kenya in September, reality lived up to the shimmering ideal.
