VIEW FROM THE SKY EXPERT

Peter Denis, guide at The Manor Ngorongoro, gives us the low down on the best wildlife sightings from the property

We had a chance to speak with Peter Denis, guide at The Manor Ngorongoro, who gave us the low down on the best wildlife sightings from the property. From the contrast of Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara National Park to the surrounding coffee plantations, there is an abundance of flora and fauna on offer.

Could you tell us a little about what game drive options are available for SkySafari guests staying at The Manor

For those taking an 8-day SkySafari adventure, we take guests on a full day excursion to the Ngorongoro Crater, while those taking a 10-day safari journey can go on a full day excursion to Ngorongoro Crater and a full day excursion to Lake Manyara National Park. Guests who book a 13-day East African SkySafari journey have the option to go to Lake Manyara for a half day game drive. What is wonderful about a stay at the Manor is that both options offer guests completely contrasting, but equally memorable, experiences. In addition to the wildlife viewing options, guests also have a myriad of optional activities during their stay at The Manor including the chance to explore the surrounding coffee plantation.

What wildlife will guests generally see and are there any less obvious flora and fauna that you like to highlight

The wildlife viewing at the Ngorongoro Crater is phenomenal and the backdrop is like nothing else on earth. You will see lots of herbivores including antelope and gazelle, but it is also a great cat destination with regular sightings of lion and leopard.

At Lake Manyara there are a plenty of monkeys, including baboons and the gorgeous blue and velvet monkeys, as well as being a sanctuary for hippo, elephants, giraffe, impala, and zebra. The lake also attracts a variety of amazing birdlife, including significant flocks of pink flamingos. Leopards also make the surrounding forest their home, as they love to find a good hiding spot in the trees in the cool shade. There is a huge variety of trees from the dense woodlands to the fascinating underground water forest, including lots of different species such as fig, tamarind, and palm trees.

How do you navigate the Ngorongoro Crater to give guests the best experience

We start with an early morning breakfast to leave plenty of time to capture the magical views as the early morning mist raises from the Crater. We tend to start in the open area where there are plenty of zebra and wildebeest, plus cats including lion. From here, we will likely head to Lake Magadi to admire the wonderful array of aquatic birds including flamingos and pelicans.

As the day heats up, we will head to the forest area known as the Red Forest after the Red Thorn Acacia found there. Here is the best place to see female elephants with their babies, the males stay in the open and leopard, who are very shy and like to hide in the cover.

What perks do SkySafari guests get on a game drive

Guests will only be in the vehicle with other SkySafari passengers, offering a more private game drive experience.
We also offer a special sumptuous picnic lunch with a beautiful table set up with chairs in a dedicated location and a plentiful picnic menu with a variety of dishes and beverage options. This experience is truly exceptional as many other operators only offer refreshments standing or sitting on blankets.

Upon their return to the Manor, guests will be welcomed to enjoy a fitting sundowner to celebrate the end of another adventurous day. Or they can indulge in a complimentary spa treatment or soak away the dust from a day on safari in a curated bubble bath experience courtesy of their butler.

Where is your favourite area to view wildlife from The Manor

The coffee field by The Manor is a wonderful area full of surprises. You can see bushpig, buffalo, and elephants, plus some amazing nocturnal species including genets, civets, and jackals.

What has been your most memorable game drive moment

It was on the crater floor, early morning about 9.30am. We watched two lionesses bring down a big zebra to feed their cubs. We watched the entire sequence from the approach to the small cubs coming out to feast on the rewards of their endeavour.
